My Home Town - Galle

Galle is the capital city of the Southern cost of Sri Lanka. The district of Galle holds the record for the fourth largest population in the country, But the living conditions have never been declined due to its population. The city of Galle is a very beautiful place facing to the blue indian ocean with golden beaches;many people started to talk about the beauty of this city after Galle Cricket stadium has been opened for International cricket matches.

The other most significant place to visit in Galle is the famous Dutch Fortress. Although this has been known as a creation by Dutch, this fortress has first been built by Portuguese. But the fortress that we see today has been built by Dutch which illustrates the beauty of Dutch architecture. But something that we should not forget is that this magnificent task has been done by the skilled people of Galle. This Fort has been build by the colonial rulers to protect the strategically important Galle Harbour and fort is the North boundary of the harbour.

Many people introduce Galle as a sleeping city, may be its because that now Galle is not a strategic commercial city as its used to be in past. After the Colombo harbour being established as a international port Galle fell in to a sleep. But Galle has been always popular for producing skilled and educated people because most of the people in Galle throughly concerned about their education; few of the Sri lankas best colleges are situated in Galle such as Mahinda, Richmond, Southlands and Sangamittha . I am a Mahindian ; Mahinda College can be known as the premier Buddhist college of the Southern Sri Lanka and one of the top schools in the country.

Not all the people love their mother town; but I certianly do. It is may be because of the excellent living conditions in the city. At present I work and study at Colombo; I see a significant difference between Galle and Colombo. In Colombo every place is crowdy, poluted,full of traffic jams, noisy and very hard to live but whereas in Galle comparatively its calm, quiet, less poluted and a pleasent city to live. because of this reason recently galle has been a popular tourist destination too. Popular hotels like Fortress hotel, Lighthouse hotel many other luxuroius lodging facilities are available close to the city.
